Nossa Senhora do Monte is a village located in the heart of the island of Brava, Cape Verde. It was founded in 1826, and a few years later it became a bishopric[1]. In 1862 Nossa Senhora do Monte became a place of pilgrimage[2].
There are a sightworthy Catholic pilgrimage church and a smaller Adventist Church in the village. Several shops and small bars are to be found in Main Street.
Several times a day, Nossa Senhora do Monte can be reached by "Aluguer" bus from Vila Nova de Sintra. There is no fixed schedule, as the aluguers depart as soon as there are enough passengers. There are no special bus stops marked with a sign board. They stop on demand.
The area around Nossa Senhora do Monte is surrounded by mountains to the west and east. Monte Fontainhas, Brava's tallest mountain reaching a height of 976 meters, is close to the village. Nossa Senhora do Monte is linked to Vila Nova Sintra, the island's capital, by a good paved road. There are good roads to the neighbouring villages of Cachaço, Campo Baixo and Tantum as well.
